Stop Being ‘Nice’
Accommodations are not a favor. They should be an expectation.
We shouldn’t need to beg for a spot at the table. When someone hurts you, it isn’t your job to make them feel better.
I’m working on this by no longer saying “it’s okay” when someone makes an insensitive remark about my stutter, even if they didn’t mean it to be insensitive. I say “Thank you for the apology” if they apologize. or “Now you do!” if they say they didn’t know.
We don’t need to pretend to be okay when our world doesn’t include us, or makes us feel like a burden. Human beings are not burdens.
